Nipun is very easy to describe. He is very hard to describe. He lives a great life. He lives one of the toughest lives. He is selfish. He is selfless. He is jobless. He has the best job in the world. He is extraordinary. He is extra-ordinary.... And he lives everyday creating a dynamic balance between these yins and yangs. At age 24, he quit his career and offered himself to service. Ever since, he has been a serial entrepreneur of a unique type: The startups come looking for his leadership and he commits all of them to a no-exit clause. Not only the startups he guides have no exits, they have deeper and deeper entrances into the domain in which they serve. And so he has established over half a dozen fully volunteer run
startup with no employees, no sales goals, no growth objectives, no exits… and they all have done extremely well doing one thing he aims for: affect transformation in the people they touch, at least in a small way, not through persuasion but by serving them and being an example of the changes he wishes to see in the world. As contradictory as it seems, he evokes a strong desire in the people he touches to be selfless.
Thank You
That a human being could offer so much to others everyday without a lot of material wealth is hard to imagine but easy to witness in Nipun. He is a case of reality being more inspiring than fiction. The first time I saw him was at a gathering of non-profit organizations convened by Planetworks. He spoke for three minutes and took questions for another two minutes. And I felt inspired, ashamed, provoked, encouraged, challenged and humbled, all at the same time. Here was an individual, living his life exactly as he envisioned it not because of having, but in spite of lacking all the resources, support and conditions that most people believe is necessary to follow one’s heart to the extent he has gone – all the way. That very second, I mentally signed up to work with him. That was four and half years ago. Ever since, we have been fortunate to observe him and work with him on a variety of service opportunities. And what a variety it has been. There is a saying, “Life is God’s gift to us, what we do with it is our gift to God”. Nipun has sent truckloads of ’em. Thank You Nipun.
